An Olympic Romance?!
the Games, an Olympic romance? & new book chat
Ciao, ciao, ciao!
(hi, hello, howdy!)
I just googled a variety of greetings in Italian and got back ciao for each one. So ciao, so glad you’re here, you lovely human!
Are you loving these Winter Olympic games? If you’ve been here for a minute, you’ll recall the Summer Olympics were a time of joy and revelry, in my heart at least. The Winter Olympics are no different.
The Games bring out my most patriotic self and at the same time I feel, from my living room in East Tennessee, more connected to the whole world. As soon as the announcer at the Opening Ceremonies says something like, “India has never medaled in the Winter Olympics” I’m clapping and saying, “C’mon, India, you can do this.”
The Olympics feel like earnestness personified and if you’re paying attention to (looks around with wild eyes) you could probably do with some earnestness right now.
Personally, I will take my earnestness like drinking water from a hose, pleaseandthankyou.
So, my writing time is an odd amalgamation digging in on my small Southern town romance about a close-knit but quirky family whilst also watching folks in intense winter gear and costumes hurl themselves around cold and snowy/icy conditions.
An Olympic Romance?
In an effort to put my many google searches to use I want to work the games into my book. Thoughts look something like:
Reasons the Olympics could be set in a small Southern town….
Could ice-skating be popular in progressive Appalachia?
Dolly Parton as soundtrack for winter Olympics….
It’s not come together. Yet.
But I’m so happy to report I’ve nearly finished the first draft on the second The One You… rom-com. In The One You Fall For we meet Indy Bird and her estranged husband Cillian “Sully” Sullivan as they navigate a two-year estrangement, forced proximity, second chance romance conundrum.
We also meet Indy’s three sisters, Brooklyn, Raleigh, and Austin.
For this second Bird sisters book, we’ll see middle-younger sister Raleigh and the slow burn of her almost entire life move from sparks to fire. It’s giving Gilmore Girls meets The Bear vibes (significantly less swearing, obvs). EEEK. I’m so excited to share more. And in the meantime, if you haven’t read Fall For, what in the world is stopping you? Grab it here or (if you’re a Knoxville local) find signed paperbacks (fancy!) at Good Girl Books and Union Ave Bookstore.
And if you already own the books but want to support my work (free, fast & fun newsletters delivered 1 to 3 times a month to your inbox!) please tap that buy me a coffee button below.
You Get a Medal! And You Get a Medal!
Let’s chat below! What are you loving in the Olympics? What are you reading? Which Bird sister book are you most looking forward to? It’s all open for discussion here!
As always, thank you so much for your support, for subscribing, and for reading. Your time is priceless and sharing it with me here is so generous.
Take care, skate hard, and talk soon,
Emily

Let's brainstorm on zoom soon!
Emily, I think you should combine the superbowl wedding inspiration with the Olympics setting!!
